LAHC has developed a reimbursement scheme for social housing tenants who lived in a property where a centralised gas hot water service was in use.

Tenants will be reimbursed for up to 6 years of their gas usage costs from 22 March 2014 to 22 March 2020.

The reimbursement scheme has been developed following decisions made by the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal which determined that these type of hot water services were not separately metered meaning tenants could not be charged for their gas usage to heat hot water.

The Residential Tenancies Regulation 2019 has since exempted social housing providers from the obligation to pay for gas that is not separately metered, effective from 23 March 2020.

To apply, you need to fill in an application form.

Further information is available in the factsheet and policy.

If you need help to apply or to confirm if the property you live in has this type of hot water service, please contact your local DCJ Housing office.
