The NSW Government has released the Protections for Residents of Long Term Supported Group Accommodation in NSW - Report on the Consultations on the public consultation phase of its proposal to improve resident protections for people with disability living in supported group accommodation.

The Department of Department of Communities and Justice ran an independent public consultation process to obtain public feedback on how to improve resident protections for people with disability living in supported group accommodation.

The public consultation was held between 12 January to 11 March 2018.

Key themes outlined in the report included:

  • Vulnerabilities of residents
  • Importance of stable housing
  • Resident rights should not be less than those of private sector
  • Standardisation and personalisation
  • Giving residents a voice
  • Interconnected role of supported independent living (SIL) services, legal guardians, family members and carers
  • Independent advice, complaints and dispute resolution.

The NSW Government would like to thank everyone who provided a written submission, rang in with their opinion, attended a focus group meeting or completed the online survey.  The opinions provided are much appreciated and will assist Government consider the next steps to support residents living in group accommodation in NSW.
