Council member, Unis Goh was invited to attend the Launch of Art Abilities on 3 October 2012. Two talented young artists who are living with autism are the centre of this art exhibition, where their amazing paintings and drawings are on exhibition at Gallery Lane Cove.

This art exhibition is a joint project of the Lane Cove Council’s Access Advisory Committee and the Lane Cove & North Side Community Services. The artists, Ping Lian Yeak and Bowman Yu are participants of the Recreation Rendezvous program, which is managed by the Lane Cove & North Side Community Services.

Bruce Fraser, Co-ordinator of Recreation Rendezvous was keen to find ways to bring awareness to the public that focus on these young artists’ abilities and talents through the exhibition as the best way for transforming disability to ability.

It was a warm sunny day when the exhibition was officially opened by the Mayor of Lane Cove Council, Councilor Scott Bennison. Visitors came from near and far to the Gallery. Ping Lian and Bowman happily greeted the visitors and showed their works to everyone.

It was an exceptionally friendly event where the artists gathered with their families, friends and the visiting public. Ping Lian Yeak is known as a Savant artist whose art works have been featured in Australia and countries abroad. Bowman Yu is currently extending his painting into learning photography, movie making and multimedia work.

These two artists’ magnificent works of art displayed in this exhibition has clearly shown that they won the hearts of many. The launch was a reminder to continue to focus on the abilities of people with disability and to celebrate their achievements.

The Art Abilities Art Exhibition closes on Monday 15 October. Gallery Lane Cove is located at 164 Longueville Rd, Lane Cove.
