A celebration of diversity-CPA Kidz in concert, By Unis Goh
Together with almost a thousand guests, I attended the Edward Lee, Chinese Parents Association - Children with Disabilities (CPA Kidz) and the Con Ensemble in concert at Sydney Town Hall on 14 March.
Miranda Vuong, President of the CPA - Children with Disabilities in her opening address said, "Tonight is a celebration. A celebration of diversity, a celebration of talent and a celebration of our children's zest for life".
The Chinese Parents Association (CPA) was formed by parents and families of children with disability in 1988, with the mission of supporting and enhancing the quality of life for children with disability and their families. Miranda told guests at the concert, "Over the 27 years, the Association has been working together in seeking and exploring ideas and new approaches that can positively impact our children's autism and assist them to overcome the real and perceived constraints that disability places on their lives".
The concert was sponsored by the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the University of Sydney and City of Sydney. It showcased a wonderful blend of musical talents of 32 CPA Kidz performers. They performed together with professional musicians of The Con Ensemble, well-known local and international singers and a pianist. It was a unique and spectacular event, in the grand setting of Sydney Town Hall. The performance included singing and hosted a range of instruments from piano, bongos to percussion.
No event can be such a great success without the meticulous planning and organisation of the families tirelessly working together, and the efforts of the performers with their intensive training that provided this beautiful performance.
It is not surprising to see family members and friends, together with an impressive large group of volunteers so excited and proud of their children's abilities on stage, performing alongside professional musicians. It's their ability that matters, and they touched the hearts of us all.
There is no stopping CPA Kidz now on what they plan to do next after this achievement! I invite you to check out their website: www.chineseparents.org.au, and join the Association in their endeavours in finding new ways to support their work.
Congratulations to CPA Kidz, Chinese Parents Association, and to everyone involved in making this concert so enjoyable and sharing your talents and abilities with us.
