The NSW Carers Advisory Council held its fourth formal meeting for 2018 on 5 December 2018 at Parliament House, Sydney.

The Council was briefed by the Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) and the Ministry of Health on relevant matters including the NSW Health Carers Key Directions Implementation Group, and the Disability Inclusion Act.

The Project Leads for two of Council’s major projects updated Council on progress since the last meeting and led Council in further planning for the projects:

  1. Conversations with regional and remote carers – the first workshop to be held in February 2019 in Mudgee
  2. Understanding the social and emotional wellbeing of carers  - Council endorsed the final report from SPRC on The social and emotional wellbeing of carers. Council also discussed strategies to address the key findings in the Report.

The Council welcomed the NSW Deputy Ombudsman Steve Kinmond and Kathryn McKenzie, Director Disability to discuss the recommendations from the NSW Ombudsman report on Abuse and Neglect of Vulnerable Adults in NSW.

The Council also welcomed from the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC), Quality and Safeguards team Sarah Hanson, Alexander Sewell & Belinda Vaughan to discuss restrictive practices authorisation. Gabi Carrigan and Alexandra Scates-Frances also attended from the NDIS Reform team at DPC to update Council on matters relating to the NDIS. Council welcomed the opportunity to continue to work collaboratively with DPC.

The Council was also joined by Rommel Varghese the Chief of Staff for the Hon. Ray Williams, Minister for Disability Services who discussed current carer issues with the Council and congratulated Council members on their program of work for 2018.

The next meeting will take place February 22 2019.
