Education pathways

Did you know that there is an education pathway to support education planning for children and young people in statutory out-of-home care (OOHC)?

This pathway is designed to support children or young people whether they are case managed by an NGO or FACS and whether they attend a public or private school.

When a child or young person of compulsory school age enters statutory OOHC, their caseworker must submit a form so the School Principal is notified that the child or young person is in care. This will trigger a support program to ensure that the student’s needs are met.

The school will organise a meeting within 30 days for personalised learning and support planning (formerly known as education planning). Carers are invited to meet with the school, caseworker, support staff and the student (if appropriate) for an assessment of the student’s learning and support needs.

Learning and support planning should be monitored and regularly reviewed. It is important to participate in this planning and work with the caseworker and school to ensure actions are followed through.

Carers play an important role in supporting kids to get the most out of their time at school.
