The NSW Government is set to transform the ageing social housing estate at Telopea in Western Sydney with an increased supply of social, affordable and private housing through the Communities Plus program.
Minister for Social Housing Pru Goward today announced that expressions of interest are now being sought for a mixed development of 12.5 hectares of land owned by Land and Housing Corporation within the Telopea Master Plan.
“The redevelopment is expected to see the site transformed from approximately 600 ageing social housing dwellings into a vibrant mixed community of more than 1000 social and affordable dwellings, and around 2500 private homes,” Ms Goward said.
“Being able to go to market is another example of how this Government does not just talk about more social and affordable housing, but actually gets on with the job of revitalisation our ageing social housing estates and creating new communities.”
Member for Parramatta, Geoff Lee said this is a wonderful next step in the revitalisation of Telopea.
“I encourage organisations to get involved and be part of the rejuvenation of the area, a hidden gem located just 23km from Sydney CBD and 10 minutes’ drive from the Parramatta CBD,” Mr Lee said.
The proposed redevelopment also includes plans for improved open spaces, new community facilities and a potential new town centre with a public plaza located near the light-rail stop, which will offer direct links to Parramatta CBD and Westmead Health Precinct.
All social housing residents currently in Telopea will have the opportunity to return to new social housing, with the redevelopment to be staged over the next 10 to 15 years.
The Telopea site is part of the Communities Plus program which cover various sites across Sydney and regional NSW delivering additional private, social and affordable homes while delivering key local infrastructure and driving economic activity. Together with the Social and Affordable Housing Fund, the NSW Government’s Future Directions policy will deliver up to 26,900 new and replacement social and affordable housing dwellings over 10 years, transforming the social housing system.
