More than 1500 social housing tenants have now benefited from brand new, fit-for-purpose dwellings built with proceeds from the sale of high value assets in Millers Point, Dawes Point and The Rocks.

The final two terraces of 293 properties in Millers Point sold at auction on Saturday, drawing the sale of properties in the area to a close with the Sirius building in its final stage of tender.

Minister for Social Housing Pru Goward said the decision to sell the properties and reinvest in new homes has resulted in a fairer social housing system.

“I made the decision to sell properties in the area in 2014. It was not a decision that I took lightly, but it was the right decision,” Ms Goward said.

“Maintenance of tired, ageing and not-fit-for purpose dwellings in Millers Point cost the taxpayer more than four times the average for social housing dwellings in NSW.

“Labor did nothing for years, allowing these properties to fall into disrepair and leaving us with huge repair bills – one terrace would have cost close to $800,000 for restoration to heritage standard.

“This Government is committed to building more social housing for vulnerable people in need of housing. To date, we have been able to build and complete more than 1120 homes with another 260 under construction right across NSW.

“We have built four to five new properties for every property sold in Millers Point and I am very proud to say that we are now able to target 1500.”

Millers Point funded homes have been built in Canterbury-Bankstown, Cumberland, Campbelltown, Penrith, Blacktown, Parramatta, Ryde, Canada Bay, Lane Cove, Liverpool, Georges River, Albury, Sutherland, Wollongong, Shellharbour, Hawkesbury, Coffs Harbour and inner-Sydney.
